The process of switching I, Cringely from Media Temple to WP Engine, which was supposed to take a few hours, ended up taking more than a week!
Poor Jennie had to do the hard work, schlepping over thousands of files from a server that continually crashed. There may be an easier way to do it but we don’t know that way. Then WP Engine ran a security upgrade in the middle of our transition, freezing us out of the system because we were neither here nor there. My nemesis CloudFlare didn’t want to give up the DNS and when we finally got it switched it for some reason took two days to propagate.
But enough of this complaining: sometimes these things are just what you have to endure.
Of course it happened right in the middle of one of the busiest technology news weeks in a long time so I have a lot of catching-up to do. Over the next 2-3 days you can expect posts on the future of Ethernet, layoffs at IBM, the NSA of course, and even Apple’s WWDC.
It’s good to be back.
Good job Jeanie and Bob.
The site (this one) still has some rough spots. Like the CSS saying to use WHITE TEXT on the WHITE background of this comment necessitated writing this on my text editor then pasting into the form.
And doing ‘development’ on a different machine, so that there’s *ALWAYS* a backup of the site is a must. Otherwise, why are you even bothering to write something. In the old days, it was carbon paper (before Bob’s time). Someone should always have a master copy of the site from which you can generate a copy. Unless you worry about the NSA/FBI/DHS impounding it, but I digress.
I noticed the white text on white background too, and decided I’d prefer to wait for that to be corrected before commenting.
Great to see your’re back in business, Bob. Sure missed you over the past days of distress.
Comment font color is fixed, we are still working out some last minute issues.
It isn’t really necessary to schlep thousands of individual files… Just back up the entire WordPress mySQL database and sftp it over to its new home. Or export the WP mySQL data, then import it back into a new database.
Happy father’s day. That’s what matters. Bring on the new posts.
Looking forward to your upcoming posts.
Hi Bob, your DNS switch took 2 days because your TTL is set for that on (172800 seconds) your domain. You should reduce that to an hour before a switch (at least 2 days before) then put it back after. Essentially the Internet was only checking for updates every 2 days.
Yes, I read the DNS book. The boringest book in the world.
Oh my god, Cricket Liu IS the author of that book! That’s hilarious! Small world.
Tteddo…. I work with Cricket Liu. I’ll pass-on the review on the DNS book.
Bob, welcome back…. technology transitions are always much tougher than people think they are.
“technology transitions” Yea, like losing the start menu and trying to deal with 3rd party substitutes.
