It’s time, finally, for my long-delayed 2015 predictions. Things just kept changing so fast I had to keep re-writing, but have finally stopped. 2015 will definitely be the Year of Monetization, by which I mean it’s the year when the bottom line and showing profits will become a key motivator in almost every market. And while profit — like beer — is generally good, it isn’t always good for everyone. So here are my 10 predictions in no particular order.
Prediction #1 — Everyone gets the crap scared out of them by data security problems. In many ways this was set up by 2014, a year when, between Edward Snowden and Target, America woke up to the dangers of lax data security. Where this year is somewhat different, I feel, is in the implications of these threats and how they play out. There will still be data breaches and, though there will be proposals how to retool to avoid such problems in future, I don’t see those turning into anything real before 2016. So 2015 will be the year when people claim to fix your problem but really can’t. Watch out for those crooks.
2015 will also be the year when the bad guys start to see their own profit squeeze and respond by doing exactly the things we hope they won’t. To this point, you see, the folks who steal all this information have been generally wholesaling the data to other bad guys who use the data to steal our identities and money. Only the buyers aren’t really that good at stealing our stuff so the wholesale value of a million credit card numbers has dropped significantly. So rather than finding new careers like my own favorite, opening a frozen custard stand, the guys who stole our numbers in the first place are starting to cut out the middle men and going after our stuff themselves. Given these are the really smart bad guys taking over from the not-so-smart bad guys, expect things to get bad, very bad, with billions — billions — in additional losses for financial institutions, retailers, and even some of us. These are the events that will finally lead — in 2016 — to real data security improvements.
Prediction #2 — Google starts stealing lunch money. Even mighty Google is under pressure to show more profit, so the search giant is reaching out for new profit centers. The first hint of this came to me in a story about how Google is preparing to recommend and sell insurance. This is revolutionary. After all, the companies that were already recommending and selling insurance online are some of Google’s biggest customers. But business is business, so Google is reportedly going into competition with its former good buddies. This is, I;m sure, the beginning of a trend. Expect Google to compete this year for every lead-gen business worth doing. Insurance, mortgages, new cars, real estate — any industry that pays well for online customer referrals will be ripe for Google, including my favorite mortgage site of all time, The Mortgage Professor, run by my personal hero, Jack Pritchard Jr.
Prediction #3 — Google buys Twitter. There’s both push and pull in this prediction. Google needs better mojo and Twitter needs mojo at all. Not only are Google’s profits under some pressure, since buying Whatsapp Facebook has been on a tear and Google needs to respond. Then there’s the problem that Twitter doesn’t appear to actually know how to run a business. Why not solve two problems at the same time?
Prediction #4 — Amazon finally faces reality but that has no effect on the cloud price war. Up until now Amazon has been a company singularly blessed by Wall Street with a high stock price that doesn’t seem to require high earnings to maintain. Well that has now changed. Amazon is becoming mortal in the eyes of Wall Street and so will have to cut some costs and not be quite so crazy about how much it spends entering new markets. Most of this won’t even be noticeable but it really began with the Amazon Prime price increase of several months ago. But here’s where this new parsimony won’t be seen at Amazon — in cloud service pricing.
That’s because the cloud price war that Amazon started is no longer dependent on Amazon to continue. Google is doing its part, as are half a dozen other companies, including Microsoft, that are willing to lose money to gain customers. So cloud prices will continue to drop, the Wild West era for cloud-based startups will continue, and anyone (this means you, IBM) who thinks there will be cloud suppliers who can charge a premium because they are somehow better than the others, well that’s just cloudy thinking. If there ever is a premium cloud it won’t be big enough to matter.
Prediction #5 — Immigration reform will finally make it through Congress and the White House and tech workers will be screwed. Remember the tech worker shortage that really doesn’t exist in the USA? Well lobbyists remember it fondly and will ride the new Republican majority to legislation that will give tech employers even more chances to bring under-paid tech workers into the country to replace domestic tech workers who are supposed not to exist. The facts are indisputable but you can lead a politician to water though you apparently can’t make him or her vote. So despite the improving and ever-more-tech-centric economy, look for no tech salary increases (again) for 2015, just more H-1Bs.
Prediction #6 — Yahoo is decimated by activist investors. Everyone has an idea what Yahoo should do with all that money earned from the Alibaba IPO. And when it comes to activist investors, their idea is generally that Yahoo should find clever ways to simply hand over the cash to shareholders. This will happen. It’s because Yahoo can’t move fast enough to avoid it. If Marissa Mayer thinks she’ll be allowed time to thoughtfully invest that windfall, then she could shortly be out of a job. In one sense it might be better for Yahoo to just make a big stupid acquisition that makes the vultures go away, though I prefer that she turn Y! into more of a Silicon Valley venture capital empire.
Prediction #7 — Wearables go terminal. As I shared a few days ago, the problem with wearable smart devices is they cost too much, consume too much power, and are too bulky. There’s a solution to this that’s beginning to emerge but it requires new chips that I am not sure will be available in 2015. So my even predicting this is an act of optimism. But if not 2015, then definitely by 2016.
Here’s the deal: the problem with wearables isn’t making them smart because they are typically accessories to smart phones we already have — phones that are by themselves plenty smart enough. So let’s stop thinking of wearables as computers and start thinking of them as terminals. All that smart watch really needs is a display, a touchscreen of sorts, and Bluetooth. Smart watches should require no computational capability beyond what I just described — no microprocessor in the sense that we’ve used that term for the last 30+ years. The archetype here is Mainframe2’s migration of PhotoShop to the cloud, sending screen images as H.264 video frames. Now replace the word cloud with the word smart phone and you’ll see where this is going. All the watch has to do is decode H.264, paint screens, and carry clicks: no OS or local processing required. Even bio-sensing is just another form of click. The result will be dumb watches that act smart, run for days, and cost less.
Prediction #8 — IBM’s further decline. You knew this was coming, didn’t you? IBM is screwed and doesn’t even seem to realize it. There was an earlier version of this prediction that said IBM earnings would drop for the first 2-3 quarters of 2015 and then recover because of lower oil prices and the generally improving global economy. Well forget that. Even if the world does do better IBM will do worse because the low dollar IBM has relied on since the Sam Palmisano days has gone away so there’s nothing left to be made on that carry trade. IBM’s old businesses are dying faster than its new businesses can grow. The company’s only near-term hope is that the Fed keeps interest rates low, but that’s not saying much.
And speaking of saying much, my next column will be all about IBM, its new Reorg-from-Hell, and what this means to customer, employees, and investors alike.
Prediction #9 — Where IBM leads, IBM competitors are following. When I was in college one of my part-time jobs was at Rubbermaid, a fantastic company based in Wooster, Ohio, where I went to school. Rubbermaid was run like a watch by Stan Gault, class of 1948 — a guy who really knew how to make money. Stan eventually retired, came out of retirement to save Goodyear, then retired again and now gives away his money. But the Rubbermaid of today isn’t anything like the company I remember because it tried and failed to compete with Tyco Industries, a conglomerate run by Dennis Kozlowski. No matter how well Rubbermaid did, Tyco did better, so Wall Street rewarded Tyco and punished Rubbermaid, eventually driving the company into a merger that created a new company — Newell Rubbermaid — which is way more Newell than it is Rubber. The problem with this tale, of course, is that Tyco’s Dennis Kozlowski was a crook and is now doing time in federal prison. Tyco appeared to do better than Rubbermaid because Tyco lied.
Now I am not saying IBM has been lying, but I am saying that IBM has been setting an example of corporate behavior that makes little to no sense. Sales go down yet the stock price (until recently) went up! Like the Rubbermaid example, this has had some effect on IBM competitors, specifically Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) and Hewlett Packard, both of which are having IBM-like troubles with their services businesses. And for CSC, which has no printers or PCs to sell, well services is about all there is. So look for IBM-inspired problems in these IT service operations for all of 2015.
Prediction #10 — Still no HDTV from Apple, but it won’t matter. Here’s the thing to remember about Apple: it’s a mobile phone company! Nothing else matters. Apple can and will continue to grow in 2015 based on current products and expanding into new markets. For 2016 Apple will need something new and I predict they’ll get it. But for 2015, Apple will do just fine.
I wonder how much the HP split will impact #9. It seems that the PC side of the business will be better off than the services side.
.
Oh, and FIRST!
Lame predictions. Translated — IBM, yahoo, amazon and apple will do nothing different. That’s 4 throw away predictions out of 10.
Google getting into referrals businesses. You said yourself, that they already started, so that’s not a prediction either.
I cringe at the joke that is this writer.
And your predictions? Please include the history of your past predictions. Oh, wait….
Bob has smarts and balls; he puts himself out there; he generates *thought and analysis*; he’s provocative. What more do you want? God?
Bob knows of where he speaks, and the success or failure of his predictions don’t matter one bit to 99% of his readers, because they’re fun to ponder and they get one thinking.
Lest you think this reply is a tad too hagiographic, please realize that I haven’t even touched the surface of Bob’s excellence.
I await your predictions for 2015, and your further revelations about the success or failure of same, in 2016.
Bob, it’s bad form to comment on yourself.
It may be bad form, but in this instance, rather amusing, imo.
Watches with screens simply have bad battery life. The bigger the screen, the bigger the battery, the longer the battery life. That’s why the iPhone 6 Plus has better battery life than the iPhone 6 and the Macbook Air 13 better than the Macbook Air 11. Watches are tiny and thus have very small batteries relative to the screen surface and thus have very bad battery life.
.
Watches based on video streaming will have even worse battery life, since streaming costs more than simply passing tiny amounts of data. Try running a videoplayer on your phone and see the battery draining.
It’s worse still. The watch won’t have a static display, and every pixel change will require a bluetooth packet (or two), so the watch battery will head south with the phone battery. You’re right the the real power draw is the display. SOC power to run it is a fraction of the bluetooth power to send screen images across, so the proposal is a terrible way to architect the watch/phone system.
But remember, his reputation is based on being reliably 80% correct, so you know he has to throw in a ringer.
Why wouldn’t it have static display? that would still be very cheap. “dumb” today is not the same dumb as it was 10-15 years ago. H264 still runs like most video compression: send the pixels that changed, don’t send the pixels that don’t (except the occasional frame refresh). For any text app being looked at, that’s a lot of pixels not changing, and there’s no reason the watch can’t remember those pixel values.
Of course, some pixels won’t change. But some will. The radio load has overhead, so even a single pixel changing means radio packets are consuming power.
About the only counter I could come up with is that, well, size matters. Yes the smaller size means smaller battery, BUT the smaller screen size means smaller resolution video. Sending 200×200 is far different from sending 720p. Bluetooth is (I believe, but someone can correct me) a lower-power network than 2.4 802.11’s. Most of that signal is only one-way and receiving is always cheaper (on power) than sending. Also, an application screen is not the same as watching a movie or tv show – right now i’m typing text in a webpage, for which only a 24×16 space ever changes every tenth of a second if I’m typing full-out at 60 (which I’m not). So for applications where it is tap-and-read, there’s almost no signal being send for much of the time.
Dick Tracy video calling would use more, of course, but hangouts shows we don’t need 1080p to have a decent conversation, and that would also be about the only time the feed would be 2-way.
There may be other tricks one can do, like the watch doesn’t have to be ‘on’ all the time, just during the time the application is actively used (it can draw the time on its own without the network or video feed).
So I agree the battery is something of a limit, but so is the screen size and limited inputs – some of the best apps are built because of limitations in the platform, not because of unlimited freedom (admittedly, so are some of the worst, but there we are)…and it would also spur a new generation of research into better batteries, too.
Two data points, neither of which counters your argument. 1) Bluetooth low energy indeed uses less power than WiFi, but nobody uses WiFi to communicate between a watch and phone. 2) Receiving takes about as much power as transmitting, at least in robust communications. (Pulling bits out of the ether isn’t cheap.)
Don’t understand this: “Receiving takes about as much power as transmitting”. What about the inverse square law : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse-square_law It’s not like you can direct the transmitting beam, it has to be omnidirectional, i.e. a sphere.
If you include the fact that the reciever has to be on all of the time to pick up the random message transmissions from the smart device, the reciever would probably consume most of the power.
Re:” Receiver on all the time” Good point. I always keep my GPS cell phone receiver off. It’s just not worth the battery drain, especially since Wi-Fi locating works adequately. On the other hand I always keep my Bluetooth radio on, even though I only use it for less than 1 hour out of 24, for stereo music. I just don’t notice a battery drain problem form Bluetooth, and I don’t even have the low energy version.
What’s a “watch”?
“watch” is a machine that counts time and displays it. modern watch is a pocket timepiece, similar to the railroad watch of the 1900s, except it’s all electronic with computers and storage and a Retina-ish screen, with phone and game capability. e.g., Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, etc.
I’m surprised you didn’t comment about Blackberry. Do you have any pearls of wisdom as to what could be its fate?
Blackberry is toast.
We all knew that Blackberry is toast, that’s nothing new. The question is will it just die or will it be bought?
Blackberry is interesting….
I don’t use one but if I had need of a lawyer I’d hope they were using Blackberry.

The Apple Watch already works quite a bit like a terminal. No third party code runs on it. Those apps run on the phone and send data to the watch. The API has only setters. Only Apple’s code actually gets executed on the watch itself, and that’s obviously tightly controlled.
The iPhone 1 didn’t have an appstore: things change. At some point people want to go jogging without their iPhone. They’ll need native watch apps.
H1-b increases are all ready being proposed in the new Republican Congress. I agree that they will be successful this year in tripling or quadrupling the cap.
If they do, will it matter? IBM has pretty much offshored everything except the execs, and most other services companies have followed suit. The only major IT areas not offshored has been sales and management, and I don’t see H1-b’s replacing those. (Yet.)
Sad about Rubbermaid. It was a company that looked after its workers and cared about product quality but Walmart took it to task on lowering prices and therefore quality. The tail about Tyco Industries is telling. Money blinds the common sense.
I like there predictions and look forwards to their success through the year. I suspect a steady field track pushing past eight per cent.
And that sorry dog, IBM; soon will this soap opera end its long march to irrelevance? And the comment from its reformers: ”What the hell happened?”
Namaste and care,
mhikl
Re. #2, Google are ALREADY doing car insurance in the UK: https://www.google.co.uk/compare/carinsurance/form?p=home
CSC CEO is an ex IBMer CSCs plan is for cloud services. CSC is losing fed business to hungry competitors. Without fed business CSC is toast. Employee moral is low.
What about ‘computers go terminal’ in general? The ChromeOS is already this; smartphones could go this way (and sell for $49.95); there are linux, ARM-based and now Intel-based sticks with computers on them – weak computers but able to serve as terminals. Nadella at MSFT will surely push the company this way if it isn’t there already: log into your WindowsCloudOS and go.
Exactly! We’ve now come full circle, thanks in large part to Hollywood-ISP cross ownership. Never mind that you can get multi-TB hard drives for under $200 and screaming-fast processing for almost nothing, everything is streamed to a dumb-down terminal with minimal storage. Just because a clear minority of the public wants to steal their lousy content. Add to that the continued inability of the majority to understand how to create even a simple WordPress page and we might as well go back to the bad old days of CompuServe and AOL.
Enjoy your VT-100, suckers!
there are pretty colors and things. more like a VT240/340
ChromeOS is not a terminal. A modern browser is very complicated software, not a video player. ChromeOS even runs locally stored webapps and runs native code (NaCl). Modern browsers an access files, ports, the video cart, everything. It’s not a dump terminal. It’s more like a phone OS but it updates the app code more often.
Technological sophistication doesn’t change the service such devices and platforms are meant to provide to their users: the ability to supervise, control and produce/consume a data processing or storage/retrieval operation from a distance, and to the extent the device/platform sees fit to provide.
While it’s true that the device through which the human interacts with the service can always be called a “terminal”, we in the tech field impart different meanings to the words “terminal” and “computer”, having to do with the level of technical sophistication and software programmability.
I like the idea of Google buying Twitter, I think that’s a win-win scenario.
.
I don’t agree about activist investors hurting Yahoo. CEO Marissa Mayer is going use much of the Alibaba money to buy back shares and do dividends to placate them, but stretch it out so no one asks what comes after. There will be too much arguing about the speed of spending the cash pile — which will be slow.
.
I also don’t see reality coming to Amazon. Somehow they have a magic reality distortion field and while not as strong as in the past, I don’t see drones coming home to roost yet.
.
Re: immigration “reform” — yes it’s a screw job for tech workers. Nice of you to call this out. Not sure if anyone else will.
.
Yes Apple is a smartphone company, but priced WAY above other smartphones and I just wonder how long they can keep defying that. Apple is more and more just becoming a first world mobile phone company.
.
A nice set of predictions. Happy New Year!
@Google buying Twitter
let’s hope it goes better than kmart buying sears. synergize the eschaton!
Re IBM, I agree. I’ve been following your posts about iBM for some time, and they are one of the reasons I just sold what remained of the IBM stock I held as an ex-employee who worked at IBM for over twenty years.
The good news is that my IBM pension is separately funded, and so doesn’t depend on the stock price.
If IBM goes under, is your pension still guaranteed?
My IBM 401K is owned/managed by Fidelity Investments. I assume thus that it’s protected? Maybe time to roll it over to my new employers plan anyway…
401k’s are protected because they’re managed completely by you. Pensions, however, might or might not be depending on the corporation.
Yes, it’s separate. Back in day when IBM had a traditional pension, IBM’s contributions went into a separate fund. I get a statement each year about how much money came in, how much went out. There’s more than enough to last for a long time.
That’s good to hear.
Kerry was caught in the cookie jar of cheap labour in India instead of in Paris defending non politically correct speech, so much for the lives lost in Paris and fight on terror
The media is almost apologetic fighting the issue
The republican congress is ready to let more in
Even when Obama got asked why he let more in without that woman’s husband having a job, the only answer was the corporations told him so
Barely any push back from the politically correct media, if we had non politically correct cartoons and media like the French there would be a lot more push back
Kerry and Obama and the computer corporations are anything but politically correct, and the IT people never organised, and the media put up no opposition, the Paris incident clearly shows priorities, as free politically incorrect opposing media and public is not one of them, terrorism and political correctness are tools to control public opinion and public opposition
France United, Europe united, but not the us, devided and controlled by corporat politically correct speech
Predictions, America lives in 1984 corporate controlled America woth corporate government politically correct speech
Not actually coherent, but lots of buzzwords.
Do you want to communicate?
I think a few spam programs leaked in….
the meaning is clear enough
Replacing Americans with indians
Pretending there is a shortage of computer people, pretending there is a war on terror, pretending there is a free press
Kerry in India instead of Paris shows what the American priorities are
Anyone opposing is politically incorrect
The frech at least died for true freedom and a free press
The republicans as well as every democrat support the h1b too
It’s a 1984 world, if you support it take me to your leader
You do realize that India is no longer the low cost center it once was, don’t you? Companies are offshoring away from India and to China, Malaysia, and other, cheaper locations.
What Cringely missed is that in Obama’s executive order on immigration, he secretly placed an expansion of H1B visas. This was hidden behind not deporting people on dependent visas and some other details, but the effect is the same since they are not part of the H1 limit.
That was about allowing spouses of H1B workers to seek work themselves. It’s about freeing people from restrictions. One would think that sort of thing would be celebrated in the land of the free.
The effect is that you have doubled the number of tech workers.
The phrase “H1-B-Gay marriage” comes to mind. (With the associated app.)
Not all spouses are tech workers. Likely, only a small percentage are. So no, this doesn’t double the amount of tech workers.
Not so small. It looks that way because they are not seeking such employment now. You also have a number of H1Bs who are married to another H1B. They are now freed to look for work elsewhere with their EAD, freeing up more H1B spots.
Also, are L visas included?
H1B visas are also a way of allowing people to work. I suppose eliminating the cap entirely is something you would celebrate? Perhaps opening the border? I mean it’s the land of the free, right?
Hi colleagues, how is all, and what you would like to say on the topic of this piece of writing, in my view its really amazing for me.
I’ve been noticing a trend of late in outsourcing where some of the rates of tier one outsources, Accenture, Infosys, etc are called blended rates (you get a local PM but the work is off shored) and due to the last 10 years of driving down local pay rates, local companies can pretty much match this rate with local resources.
.
Still can’t beat the rates of the lower tier, Cap Gemini, etc but there quality is beyond shitty.
I notice that Bob has no predictions about IP-TV. In a previous column he declared that cable providers are switching to “digital”, which has been happening for years since QAM is digital. In that “look back” article he said “Cable TV is just fine, thank you. Avram thinks cable TV will go all-IP”, but that prediction has no deadline, so yeah, when bandwidth is unlimited and un-bottle-necked, TV may go all IP. Right now it makes to sense to use one-to-one connections, all competing with each other, when one-to-many is so much more efficient.
Sorry “makes to sense” should be “makes no sense”. One-to-one is wasteful of bandwidth compared to one-to-many.
Bob, good call on the IBM derived behaviour inside HP and CSC. I recall several of their PHB class proudly speaking of their years in IBM. I have the impression they did not learn what not to do.
‘Wearables go terminal’ I knew this was a fad that would die.
“Rubbermaid was run like a watch by Stan Gault,”
I take it that Stan Gault made very excellent watches?
>Immigration reform will finally make it through Congress and the White House and tech workers will be screwed.
This is a something that tends to be said by people who are all in favor of immigration amnesty. The President should be impeached for bypassing Congress, and instead people whine about Congress doing the bidding of the business lobby and screwing tech workers.
At least when Congress proposed it, they were reducing slots from the visa lottery to be replaced by the STEM grads. This is basically a wash, even in the tech sector.
#10 almost correct. Apple is a consumer electronics company whose most profitable product is the iPhone. They will continue to explore other avenues to drive revenue and eco-system stickiness. ApplePay and Apple Watch will help.
.
They probably won’t do a TV, because the margins in even SMART TVs are terrible, and they are premium brand. Unless they come up with some way to revolutionize TV watching, they will stay out. In the Steve Jobs biography, Steve had proclaimed he had found the answer…. but here we are years later without seeing one. He was either just plain wrong, or too far ahead of this time for the technology to be ready. Or, a great BS’er.
Put the Apple logo on and add $2000 to the price.
Supposedly he had come up with SIRI for TV, but that is probably BS, since they don’t develop their own technology, and a channel could then run ads telling your TV to change to their channel.
If Apple have figured out how to kill off HDMI with something that actually works, that would be a bonus!
.
As for entering in to the HDTV market, really the only options is to have a fully integrated TV with players and surround sound all built in. Perhaps even hard-disc storage of your Blu-Rays (which the Blu-Ray people already object to even when you have bought them!). But we’re not at the tipping point for 4k TVs so it’s either that Apple lead, or be left dangerously close to having a brand new obsolete product.
Man, Bob’s already nailed #8 — IBM’s further decline, and it’s not even February yet:

“So despite the improving and ever-more-tech-centric economy, look for no tech salary increases (again) for 2015, just more H-1Bs.”
If there is no shortage of tech workers, then salaries are not going to rise anyway, right? According to conventional logic, if an employer had his/her pick of workers, they would have no incentive to increase salaries. So a plateauing of tech salaries by itself does not imply the presence of an abundance of tech workers (including the H1B workers, that is.) By the same token, if the H1B visa were to be scrapped and every foreign tech worker eliminated from the US economy tomorrow, salaries still wouldn’t increase because, according to you, there is no shortage of tech workers in the US.
I guess I am in the minority among geeks but I just don’t get this watch bit? I used to wear a wrist watch. I found myself doing things like looking at my watch all the time wondering if I had enough time left to finish what I had going, or I have to leave no matter what at 1:00 what time is it now, oh 12:30 ok I can mess with this 30 minutes, what time is it now, oh 12:35 I guess I better hurry up I only have 25 minutes left….. Said enough is enough and started carrying a pocket watch. Did that for years, then got a cell phone, thought why am I carrying this watch when this phone has a more accurate time, alarm……. stopped carrying a watch. When I want to look at the time or check for an email I pull it out of my pocket. If I have an important meeting to get to, I pub it in my calendar for the time to leave, never late. Why obsess about things with something on my wrist? I just don’t get it.
I got a cheap pebble recently;y and find it most useful for checking notifications (emails, sms, etc) without having to take my phone out of my pocket.
.
at a glance I can determine whether it’s urgent or needs action and if so, i can then get my phone to do so.
.
Other applications are hit and (mostly) miss, I use a timer at the gym to help with my stretching and thats about it.
.
The pebble would be perfect if it could respond to sms with canned respones on IOS (android can do this). Hopefully, the apple watch will come with some API’s to do so.
If you have a light weight, thin watch, you won’t be inclined to obsess over it. Unfortunately, those tend to not be smart and are also fairly expensive these days.
I don’t have a watch, nor a smart phone, just a dumb ol’ phone for talkin’ to people (that I hardly use anyway). I might not be connected but they can’t track me either!
You don’t expect VR in the style of the Oculus Rift to take off this year?
I guess it will take few weeks to find out whether you or IBM is telling the truth. One thing I think you need to go after is that big companies just don’t work anymore in IT and Software. There are too many layers of management, too many chiefs while they cut Indians and don’t train the ones they have. The successful companies are smaller and more innovative. Look to business partners of the big 4-5 software companies to get around the bureaucracy if you have to use big company software. It’s true at HP, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, all of them. There companies would easily be worth more in the market broken up as each business unit focuses on it’s business. IBM has 93 brands on acquisitions and each is worth more apart than as a part of IBM. IBM is schizophrenic. Services and software should never be in the same company. I’m in software. The goals are conflicting. Software is about providing the most functional value to a customer at a fair price with great documentation, support, and intuitive interfaces that forgo training to perform specific tasks. Then add training if the software is more complicated and for weaker customers. For services, the game is “we are your expert, we know what to do”. You hire services because you either can’t or don’t want to integrate the systems. As services, you convince the customer you are the “subject matter expert”. HP, IBM GBS/GTS, InfoSys, CSC, WiPro, TaTa mainly exist because “big companies want to do business with big companies”. When services and software are in the same company, then management lets the software team slack off on documentation and training, so they can double charge the customer for services to train the customer and provide professional services. If the software is great, you don’t need professional services. For a software company, professional services are a “crutch” keeping your software from being great. Good for Oracle, bad for customers. Big software companies hate small companies and punish them with software audits and other punitive processes that make customers hate them. They tell reps and salespeople that “we love SMB” then just absolute hate them in accounting, sales, and support. This has to stop. If you have to measure the usage then “build it into” the software and then when they exceed their license send the salesman to go have a friendly conversation about expanding their usage. Don’t send the software audit mafia to “shake them down”, Microsoft! By the way, if you don’t have 6-7 layers between a line person and the CEO you can sure help the customer by making your brands into smaller business and making the software cheaper for the customer. Every management layer has a price and impacts profit, what value do they add? Think in terms of how Warren Buffet runs his “other” businesses. He puts in good management and they run businesses with no more than 4 layers of management. Perhaps he can make IBM more valuable by breaking it into at least 5 smaller companies, or maybe 93 brands.
Bob, the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield hack should have you nailing the #1 prediction. BTW, BCBS Anthem is a big IBM medical provider for many employees on the East Coast adding to the layoff and firing woes of the company.

BEST WAY TO HAVE GOOD AMOUNT TO START A GOOD BUSINESS or TO START LIVING A GOOD LIFE… AND ALSO CHANGE YOUR LIFE..I was so confused and into severe poverty about a month ago. I was just going through some blog online when I met a testimony of this BLANK ATM CARD made by REX TECH of email address: expertatmhacker@outlook.com I contacted that very address and I got one at an imaginable rate.(compared to what the card carries, the rate is minimal) At first I thought,it was gonna be some scam or something. But when I got the card I could get nothing less that £30,000 in a day. (Thirty thousand pounds). Here is testimony I saw; “Its the programmed ATM card that can hack into all ATM machines. Its works with any currency and in any country where you might be living. Its is programmed in a way that when transaction is carried out with the card ,it can’t be traced. To make use of this card ,you need no account number or even pin of anyone. Its simple because there is a manual attatched that teaches usage ,and also give more explanation concerning the card.” So friends, its a new year and a new beginning. If you need funds to start up some business or money to live a good life? Then you gat to make this opportunity yours. Though is illegal as you and I know ,but since government can’t satisfy my whole needs, I have to do what I have to do,to get what I want and for my family to be happy..Though this post is not for everybody, but for those who truly need change from a poor state to a wealthy life. A way to say happy new year to you and you out there. The email address once more is expertatmhacker@outlook.com, email address expertatmhacker@outlook.com he will help you…..
