More theaters are being added every day but the fact of Hollywood life is that this film is viewed in the market as having already come and gone in 2011. You and I may feel differently, so please share that view with your local theater.
The larger commercial opportunity, I’m told, is Video-on-Demand, which comes in July, with DVD shortly after, then eventual appearance on all the Internet streaming movie sites. That’s for the USA, though much the same is happening right now in about 20 foreign markets.
Yeah, you and I definitely feel this is an ageless piece. It’ll still be relevant 20 years from now….
Bob,
I’m looking forward to the video release of the Jobs interview.
I notice you still show a link and cloud tabs for the Cringely Startup Tour that apparently fell through. Are you ever going to discuss what happened to it and the videos of the first round of interviews?
I’m not much of a Jobs fan, nor am I really named Phil. But I wouldn’t want to deny your kids the best education you can afford. Have you advised any of the rabid Apple blogs about your film? I looked at a couple just now and saw nothing. If you appealed to them for support, I’m sure you could drum up more than a few eager phone calls from the readers at AppleInsider, Mac Rumors, TUAW, etc. Perhaps you could even sell a streaming iOS app.
How about the Cringely-not-in-Silicon-Valley-startup tv show?
I think a Kickstarter project of some sort is due from Bob before his retirement!
NerdTV?
Startup Tour?
I’ve also been waiting for more information about the Startup Tour and was wondering whatever became of it.
Cringe is such a whore. Airing video of dead people for profit, come to think of it, that’s something worse.
Gee. Lets see. What do they call a book written about a person that is written by a 3rd party. Oh yeah, a biography. And the strange thing is that you can write one 500 years after the person is dead and maybe even make money off it.
and the person who comes to a “whore”‘s website by purpose and design to whine is… ??
For my $0.02 worth I’m waiting for (and very much looking forward to) the DVD release of this. I’m not aware of any UK theatres showing it or planning to, and if they do it will probably be for one day only like the US schedules you’ve published. Even then if a theatre in the UK does show it, is it likely to be one I can get to?
So bring on the DVD – I’ll be buying 🙂
Also, as another commenter said here – what happened to the start up tour and Nerd TV 2 (never mind the downloads for Nerd TV 1)? Please don’t retire before these are available.
Ditto! And I’ll take two copies of NerdTV Season 2!
Have you contacted the business agent at any of your local theaters to see if they will play it? I suggest the text:

One of my favorite tech columnists, who goes by the name Robert X. Cringely, interviewed Steve Jobs for his PBS TV special Triumph of the Nerds in 1995. The full interview footage was originally thought to be lost but was found last fall on an old VHS tape and restored by modern digital trickery to 35mm film, available from Magnolia Pictures for presentation. I would love for this film to be screened at . If you’re interested, you can find out more about the print at the following links:

I’ll buy the DVD of this fo sure, being in the UK it’s unlikely I’d get to a cinema to see it. But as has been said by other what I really want is to buy Nerds 1 & 2 in a decent Video format.
There was a mention of your video in the Guardian in the UK yesterday (even linked off the home page) but there was no mention of availability in the UK. Could be worth contacting them if you have details, or at least adding a comment to the article.
When does it come to Pirate Bay?! 🙂
No local theater yet. No cable. So I’ll look forward to the DVD.
You should have a talk with Horace Dediu over at asymco.com.
He’s working on disruptive opportunities for the Hollywood model of film making. He’d love to hear from you.
You really need to show it somewhere in Austin. Austin is probably one of the largest Mac-based concentrations in the country. It would definitely pack the house. I’d go!
Don’t suppose it will appear on iTunes?
Peter
Eventually, yes. They’ve already asked.
Hi Bob. Please can it be added to Google Play as well? Thanks
Bob,
Why are you going away anyway. I am happy to send a micropayment (something you talked about here first) of say $1 per week for this blog. I already do similar for Leo Laporte and would be happy to do for content creators I follow like yourself, Scott Sigler and Seth Godin.
If you had put that option up years ago you would have a couple of hundred of my bucks in your pocket by now.
You can’t beat the regular stream of income. Ask any bank manger.
JF
… Something like a “tip jar” PayPal button in the blog template would be quite effective, I think. $0.25 * 4x / week * 50 weeks = $500 / year … then, times _ loyal, tipping readers (so long as the content and conversation is of the quality we’ve come to depend on) …
That sounds good, in theory. I wonder what te numbers are in reality, for blogs with similar audiences, that already have such a mechanism.
The parallel isn’t exact, or even good, but for several years I ran a non-profit website designed to help people with a specific health problem.
It was very popular, I got a lot of hits, I had professionals in the field asking to be listed in the resource section, I got responses and requests for help from all over the world, and I had a PayPal “Donate” button in the upper left hand corner.
I never got a single donation. Not one. Not a single measly quarter. Thus I can’t help but have my doubts about micro-payments and donations as the basis for a steady living.
re: tip jar and/or micropayments, as a tipper, I quite like Flattr (www.flattr.com). I’ve no idea what it’s like for the one receiving the funds, what kind of rigamarole they need to go through to actually collect, however it’s certainly the easiest method I’ve used to date for making tips and donations.
oh look, Bob already has 2 tips waiting for him (at time of writing):
https://flattr.com/thing/426048/cringely-on-Twitter
Yes it says “2 people wants to give you money”.
What was it they say is a sign of spam email?
Since its not coming to theaters anywhere near me, I’ll watch it when it come out on streaming media. Wait, let me clarify that.
I’ll watch it when it shows up on Netflix. If it does not show up on Netflix, then I’ll just go without.
I’m actually a little frustrated you fell for Hollywood’s gated release schedule game.
Bob, at the end of the trailer for the movie (which is linked off AppleInsider) you are listed as ROBER X. Cringely. Thought I would mention so that mistake is not made again.
missing a B or a T? there was that one comment earlier… .
i agree with JoeF above. Micropayment for continuing columns? I’m IN.
/beat horse beat horse beat horse long after the flies are gone/ the one place where micropayments, perhaps in the form of a clearing house, are really going to work are the side door entrances for the newspaper and so on. those guys want 20 bucks a month. half a buck to read an article linked off the web through a clearing center is money they’d never see.
Raising my hand too.
…. meaning I agree with gary crofton
All my loose ends — the Startup Tour, NerdTV, Moon Shot, the future of this column, etc. — will be tied-up by the end of the summer. Look for a series of posts here announcing in detail what’s happening with each. For the most part I think you’ll be pleased.
Bob,
Looking forward to all of these.
Yes, please release them all, THANKS
So it’s possible that you’re still going to write in some capacity after your “retirement?” I’d be very happy about that.
Everything will be illuminated, the suspense is killing me I hope it lasts.
“The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste”
I’ve always remembered that line from the interview and have strived to inject as much quality into my software as I could.
I’m looking forward to hearing the complete interview.

I saw the first run @ Hillcrest Theater in San Diego. Lots of Mac People came and the interview is fantastic. I’ll buy a copy gladly.
Bob,
It may be too late, but I would suggest you try and get the film into the Maui Film Fest in June. https://www.mauifilmfestival.com/
I will buy the dvd or digital download. I saw it in Baltimore. This interview is a Masters class. You can literally go back in time and use it as a blue print for turning a near bankrupt company into worlds most valuable.
I would subscribe to Bobs blog. I may not agree with all he writes and his incorrect sometimes, but there is no other blogger I look fwd to reading more. He doesnt post every 5 minutes so when he does it’s going to be interesting. Also there is no one else who blogging I know of who can dig as far back as he can with his personal experience.
[…] I am a big fan of Bob Cringely’s blog. And now I am a big fan of Bob Cringely’s project to market a lost video interview that he did back in 1995 with Steve Jobs. He posts about it here. […]
Bob, I wish you the best commercial success possible, although I feel from your comment you worry about being late to market in order to maximize the best splash ($$) possible. Don’t worry, this film is an actual nugget of history, we don’t have such perspective pieces on Ford or Edison. This film can perhaps be a long continual lesson for our lethargic technology corporations (IBM?) and inspiration for the ones to follow. Focus on the long term.
Hello Bob. I saw the interview in Montreal today and thought it was great and I can’t wait to get it on DVD. It was a little disappointing that the picture/sound quality wasn’t as good as it was in Triumph of the Nerds, but it’s the content that matters.
P.S. The Montreal Gazette gave the interview a nice write-up.
https://www.montrealgazette.com/Steve+Jobs+prophet+time/6569222/story.html
P.P.S. Any chance of unearthing more of the Douglas Adams interview?
P.P.P.S. Where is Triumph of the N3rds?
Please do your best to get this up on the iTunes store, sad/ironic if this particular piece of content is not made available there of all places.
Best regards
Nav
No local showings (2 hours away is closest, but I can’t manage to make the date.)
DVD would be great; but a NetFlix release would be good too.
It’s amazing how you lost the opportunity to make big bucks by NOT putting this out on the for a smallish fee ASAP (in original quality even).
By now, the Steve train has gone, especially since this free interview is probably just as interesting:

I’m eagerly waiting for the chance to buy the interview somehow–DVD, iTunes, whatever. My daughter and I saw it SF, and were thrilled to meet you after the show. The interview is a priceless peek inside the mind of Steve Jobs, and I can’t wait to see it again.
I just watched the interview at the MDC Tower Theater in Miami. Watching in the heart of Calle Ocho was a nice touch. Much like the Inner Mission in San Francisco. Photos on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/rick.valdez
I enjoyed the analogy of A-Thinkers being like sharp rocks in a tumbler. They’re rough edges creating friction against each other results in a smooth and beautiful product.

I just viewed the video this past weekend via AppleTV/iTunes (rather fitting) and both I and my wife were captivated. I’ve read the Jobs biography, so many of the details were not new, yet hearing them directly from him…observing how carefully he considered his responses…and recognizing how brilliantly insightful & articulate he was made it a delightful experience. My first computer was the original Mac in the 80’s and I’ve been an Apple fan ever since. Steve Jobs was one of those rare people that totally reshaped the world and he did it simply by his mission to provide people with “better things”.
I believe the facts written within your write-up is really superb. I’ve been doing work on a preliminary analysis mission regarding this topic and your weblog really helped with numerous considerations that I had. I’m creating a term paper for school and I?m currently following many blogs for assessment.
by natural means much like your internet site however you should examine the punctuational upon quite a few of your respective discussions. Some of options rife by using punctuational difficulties and I to locate the item quite annoying to make sure the fact however Let me surely revisit just as before.
