No other explanation makes any sense.
Certainly there is no supply problem that could keep Apple from introducing a white iPhone. But what if white is a Verizon exclusive in the USA? That would to a certain extent pull the branding rug out from under AT&T and even put a bit more oomph behind those iPhone users who might choose to jump carriers.
It’s silly, I know, but as Mrs. Cringely always says, “Husbands die every day.”
Bob,
Might be time to rethink the life insurance policy in case Mrs. Cringely is up to something.
Watch yourself Bob.
You forgot the marketing tie-in with the Beatles’ White Album!
Well played. No chance Steve will let a marketing opportunity like that pass him by.
Makes no sense. Most phones are black or dark grey because people prefer the darker colors. Perhaps you mean Verizon will offer both colors.
Interesting theory… But I thought the actual problem with the white phone was that the relative transparency of it messed with the internal sensors. But, hm, I guess they could have solved that by now if they really wanted to…
There are third-party white replacement cases you can buy in Asia right now. There’s no sensor problem. It’s a marketing issue.
Kudos on the best ending to an article ever.

Thanks for sharing my pain.
No, the iPhone Verizon will release will be Hello Kitty Pink.
I would think if the Verizon iPhone had colors, it would be Verizon Red.
LOL, Al.
there are a very very few white iPhone IVs out there on ATT. one of my favorite web pundits, James Lileks, got one from deep under the counter because he’s as much a fixture at his local Apple Store as the manager when there are new toys due. and because he happened to mention 4 or 5 times that all the pretty was leaking out of his iPhone 3 because the screen cracked, and he was kind of waiting out the white iPhones.
he’ll feel a little silly with a white phone and redialling folks when all the rest of us are yakking away past every radio black hole on the street.
but I’ve been smirking around for a couple months that it would be a fine turn of the Karma wheel if your phone had to get Very Zoned to be white.
Bob,
Is this an insider job? Or another desperate prediction on your behalf to mill a conspiracy theory of the missing white iPhone 4s? I think its more of the latter.
Even Apple’s explanation is a complete bullcrap to me. I have a white 32GB iPhone 3GS and that wasn’t so hard to manufacture wasn’t it, Steve? I see no micro-fractures nor discoloration after 2 years of “normal” use.
Bah! What explains the missing white iPhone 4 (that Apple don’t want to tell you folks) is there is a fundamental design failure of the iPhone 4 (hint: “you are holding the phone the wrong way”) and other things we will never discover, nor care about, since everyone’s attention now is the iPad2 and iPhone5.
Producing a white iPhone 4 this late a stage in its lifecycle is not smart business. It is too late for the iPhone 4, even when we consider Verizon potential in the mix.
Verizon will get the iPhone 5, white or not, ahead of AT&T by May this year (my bold prediction) compared to AT&T’s June splash. Verizon’s LTE is fully operational by April but their iPhone 5 will also support cdma2000/EV-DO via a single-SoC phone baseband solution from Qualcomm. Apple’s A4 will keep powering the logic board.
That makes perfect business sense!
Try again, Bob.

The iPhone 4GS will primarily be differentiated by the A5 processor (based on the dual core Cortex A9). The dual core phones are already trickling out and Apple won’t change the form factor or add surplus features. They’ll produce a faster iPhone 4 just like the 3GS.
We’ll see tomorrow.
Sorry, I don’t buy it.
It really is that difficult to get titanium oxide to mix properly with silica to create a glass that doesn’t exhibit swirls. Placing the paint behind the glass and using whit plastic is much easier. But that is not what Steve wants. Also, the AntennaGate issue provided a good cover for a redesign.
I think we’re all going to be at least somewhat surprised at just what iPhone model will come out of Verizon. It’s not going to be an iPhone4 as we know it, and I still don’t think VZW or Apple would bother shipping a CDMA-only iPhone4 with that tasty, new LTE network just laying there scantily clad, looking all sexy.
Which reminds me, I still want my Christmas Card. C’mon, Mrs. Cringe!
Apple’s marketing strategy is based on perceived hipness.
No surprise to create cachet for the cool kids with the new white phones.
[…] Robert X. Cringely predicts that the upcoming white iPhone 4, which will have been delayed by nearly a year by the time it is released, has been delayed not because of production troubles, but because the white iPhone 4 is the CDMA iPhone that Apple is rumored to be producing for Verizon. Cringely also predicts that the white iPhone 4 will be exclusive to Verizon, giving unhappy AT&T customers yet another reason to change providers. […]
Ahhh, no. I don’t think that will fly. If what you’re saying is that Verizon would have only the white version, then I don’t think this will happen. Too many people would want a black iPhone and it would hurt Verizon’s sales.
I never said you couldn’t get a black iPhone from Verizon, just that you COULD get a white one.
sorry bob, totally beat you to this one:
16 Things That Will Absolutely, Positively Happen in 2011
* When it finally appears, the Verizon iPhone will also turn out to be the White iPhone, causing every Apple fanboy on the planet to experience simultaneous orgasm. However, it will only be available from AT&T.

Then it must be true, as everyone says, that I’m a mere shadow of you.
1/11: So far only the black model is available from Verizon announcement today.
Yup. Didn’t take this prediction long to fall flat. Sorry Cringe…better luck on the others.

Textual content messaging has turn into an integral part of our day-to-day lives. No one can deny the insurmountable amount of convenience it has allowed us when attending matters of each our private and business affairs. The ability to ship fast messages on the go is what makes text messaging so enticing that the majority of us simply can not stay with out it. It has really transcended from a mere luxury to a necessity as evidenced by the heavy influx of cell phones in the market today. Amongst them, the Apple iPhone might be the one that garnered essentially the most public adulation. It is because the iPhone is the first telephone that combined the powers of both cellphone and computer.
Intriguing site. We might have applied a little of this tips and never have wasted so much time.

Does any person have an estimated price of how much the iPhone 4 16GB will be when the iPhone five Comes out subsequent 12 months. Usually the latest/existing iPhone would go affordable when a new iPhone comes out – When the iPhone four came out the 3GS when low cost, when the 3GS came out, the 3G when less expensive. (If you get what I indicate).
