Is it just me, or is their rss feed broken? When I try to subscribe to https://www.housingwatch.com/writers/robert-x-cringely/rss.xml I get a whole bunch of articles by other random people. If this gets fixed, I’ll read those articles. If not, I doubt I’ll remember to make it over there.
In my RSS feed reader you can filter to only take articles ‘from’ Cringley. I suggest you do the same.
I feel stupid. I can’t logically connect AOL to real estate. Okay. OK, so AOL is now on its own and we do indeed have “AOL Real Estate.” Oh, but there, look! It’s this “HousingWatch.com” page that is “powered by Aol Real Estate” and has a sort of mashup of articles loosely glued together by the notion of, like, housing related “dish” and stuff. I feel like it’s all Koyaanisqatsi, with a side of magic mushrooms or something. It feels like there’s an interesting back story. Maybe someone in a corner office in a tall building called everyone who happened to be in the hallway outside to a meeting, threw a wad of money at them and said, “I don’t care what it is or how you do it, just get it done. Now.”
I forgot to mention that I did enjoy the essay.
WTF!?
AOL. As in DOA.
Trulia.
Zillow.
Those I would comprehend. But AOL?
Seriously, dude, what drugs are you on?
People actually connect to anything AOL serves up? Dude, we’d all probably send in at least $5 each to your PayPal acct. not to have to see you sink to such depths.
I hope cringely.com would remain? If not, then its been a pleasure reading your blogs these past 4 years…..
Business must be lousy at the Cringely estate. Just what are the blogs going to say? “Dudebro, the housing market still sucks, yo’! But check out the new iPhone real estate app! Steve Jobs is a stud, brah!”
Agreement Of Loss
It sucks not realizing how much I value something until it’s gone.
Please come back Mr. Cringeley! And give me a PayPal button that I can use to kick in a few bucks.
I guess the aluminum disk drive and trip to the moon aren’t working out.
Writers are funny.
GAH!!!!! Don’t give in to the “Dark Side”. Just like in the movies, AOL was a “prodigy” at the beginning of the internet revolution. Since then it has completely jumped the shark. I totally agree with those above…. add a PayPal button please!!!!! I’ve been reading your blog for years and years. You shouldn’t have to pan handle from those guys.
Merry Christmas

Hmm, maybe Bob can spur AOL into action, becoming more than just a
faded memory of dialup days gone-by…although I still use their email,
and recently http://www.mail.com is also powered by AOL.
To those saying Bob shouldn’t do this…hey, I’ll wait to pass judgement.
Sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do to pay bills!
Hmm. I think I’ll pass.
FYI… The link you have in your post is no longer valid, it points to:
https://www.housingwatch.com/2009/12/10/no-jobs-no-housing-no-bull/
However the article is now posted at:
https://www.housingwatch.com/2009/12/11/no-jobs-no-housing-no-bull/
They changed the date in the URL.
Bob – please do not drink the AOL kool-aid. My friend Time Warner tried it once, it wasn’t good. In the name of all that is valid, step away from the 300 baud modem. You could build a Pacific archipelago from the mounds of unused AOL cds that have shipped in the last 10 years, if I see a Cringely flag planted in it I think I am gonna hurl.
Seriously, don’t damage your credibility with this move. Anything uttered on AOL becomes automatically untrue. You could damage the universe spewing truths on the AOL bandwidth, rendering them untrue and throwing elementary physics out of balance.
Hi Bob,
So is this AOL thing in addition to your existing blog?
Or is it in place of your existing blog? (Perish the thought!)

Well the link takes me to a basically empty page. Perhaps your article appears embedded in a huge advertisement, which will have been blocked, or only appears as some Flash manifestation, though I did try to enable the latter to no effect. Seems fairly typical of AOL from what I know though less typical of you. I’ll check back in a few weeks to see if normal service has been resumed before deleting the bookmark but if not then thanks for the interesting articles over the years.
On the iPhone can’t turn off mobile theme or get to mp3.
NOW can we see NerdTV 2.0?
And coincidently the Cringely’s Mortgage Blog link is 404’d…
Bob, been reading your stuff since it was in the back page of a magazine and Pammy was your main squeeze and I’d rather be Rick Rolled than read another article like that.
People will do anything for money…

Bob, the AOL page is fully of spambots and morons, and the code is poorly written, so I’d like to respond here to the content of your essay.
The housing market is undergoing a correction. You can call it a depression if you’d like, but be careful not to get confused about where the market belongs. The price explosion of 2001-2006 was unsustainable. The demand simply doesn’t support it. Right now we have a housing glut, meaning the supply is greater than the demand. A downward price correction is the only meaningful way to return to market stability. Supply must come down to a level supported by demand, and when it reaches that level, that’s where it must stay. The bubble prices of 2006 are gone, and they’re not coming back. Nor should we want them to come back! Affordable housing is coming back, and we should all be grateful for that.
The housing boom is gone. A lot of people who were previously employed in the housing industry, and the industries that support it, have lost their jobs as a result of the correction. We should not expect nor want these people to return to work in the housing industry! Their labor can be more efficiently allocated into other more productive sectors of the economy.
The adjustment period is a painful one, I agree. But all the things our politicians are doing to prevent it from happening can only lead us back onto the unsistainable path that got us here in the first place. If Obama really is doing nothing about the problem, we should be thanking him for it!
I tend to differ with Mr Cringely’s opinions: I disagree with them a lot. No matter; that’s why we have elections and beer. But the use of that AOL site is bizarre. It would be nice to agree or disagree on line but I’ve never seen such a mass of spambots and idiocy. By posting his (mostly wrong) ideas there Bob has made intelligent argument impossible and made it impossible for anyone to take his (mostly wrong) views seriously. Save the man from himself.
Regarding AOL — go back to one of the first season NerdTV shows and see the discussion on AOL. As the Internet was growning, AOL management made a change in their service that was contrary to how the Internet operates. That hurt them. AOL was bought by Time Warner who did not know how to manage them. (It can be argued they do not know how to manage their core businesses either.)
Well — AOL was just spun off and is not again an independent company.
Lets not throw too much dirt on them, just yet. This could be the beginning to their comeback. The idiots that mismanaged them for years are now gone.
While Bob’s AOL column was short, it did have a powerful and important message — JOBS !!!
If people can’t find good paying work, the economy will suffer. The real estate business is a part of the economy that particularly sensitive to the problems of unemployment.
As long as the USA government continues to ship jobs offshore and make operating a company so expensive, we can only expect unemployment to get worse. Neither party gets this.
This morning in the news — so use law makers want to lower the minimum wage to create more jobs. If you massively under pay people, how does that help the economy?

Sounds like the first paragraph answers the question in the second. It helps by NOT making operating a company so expensive.
I love how whenever AOL is mentioned, people are like “How could you even bring yourself to utter the letters A, O and L in the presence of such technological connoisseurs as us?” Or more accurately, “ZOMG, AOL is teh 90’z!!!1!”
The truth is, some of the most popular blogs on earth are AOL properties. If you read any blogs other than this one, then you may very well be an AOL customer. Engadget, Autoblog, TUAW? Ringing any bells?
I realize that they are far from what they used to be, but it’s not like Bob’s mailing CD-ROMs to people’s houses.
I used to goof around on Quantum Link, funny to see these guys still persisting in the market place!
Cringely: don’t let them pay you in Q-pons.
nice, AOL real estate rocks!
Been following you for years, Bob. Just read your first AOL posting and removed your bookmark when I finished. I’ll see you again when you come back to tech. Until then, goodbye.
Dang you guys are harsh. He’s just moonlighting.
As long as he takes a shower after writing for AOL I don’t mind.
Not tasteful. Very NOT tasteful. Poor kids -someone is gonna remind them of these when they are older. I also would not want to see my mother like that. I would reject them too.
Do they think it’s a good idea to not have an RSS feed on this? How often am I going to remember to read it?
I enjoyed the article, however most of the comments were of the lowest denominator category, not very impressive.
Hi,
AOL is something to avoid – not promote.

So happy that I found your website . Looking forward to getting to know more about you. 🙂 I sell Mountain Brook Real Estate in AL . Look at my site . I am exploring ways to broaden my business .
Hi John, it is a interesting news about AOL.
But I think AOL real estate business is good and trust worthy too.
I think the AOL real estate works just as well as Zillow or Trulia. The sites look strikingly similar. Maybe AOL will do a better job with San Diego real estate values. What’s the traffic volume on the site?
