Financier George Soros became famous for breaking the Bank of England. You can do the same thing right now to BP and help clean oil-covered birds in the process.
Soros’s gambit took place on September 16, 1992. At that time there was a huge spread between British and German interest rates which ought to have forced down the value of the pound sterling. But the Bank of England was determined to defend fixed exchange rates. The head of the Bank said he would spend up to $15 billion buying pounds to accomplish this. Soros saw this as the bank metaphorically spitting into the wind. So he took the bank up on its threat, selling short $10 billion worth of British pounds, which proved more stress than the Bank was willing to endure. When the Bank that day stopped buying, the value of the pound crashed and Soros was able to cover his short positions (buy back at a lower price the pounds he had previously sold) making a $1.1 billion profit on the deal.
Not a bad day’s work.
Jump now to BP. According to news accounts everywhere, BP is right now trying to influence public discussion of its wild well spewing oil in the Gulf of Mexico by purchasing Google AdWords like “oil spill, ” for which the multinational oil company was recently paying Google $1.48, according to NPR. Web sites about the accident, news from the region, environmental or energy policy, or about oiled-up sea birds should notice BP ads appearing on their pages.
BP pays Google AdWords and Google AdSense, in turn, pays a discounted sum to the owner of the web page on which the ad is displayed — but only if a reader actually clicks on the ad.
BP isn’t the first outfit in trouble to try managing its PR through AdWords. Former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay did it first back in 2005.
BP is reportedly spending upwards of $10,000 per day on Google AdWords.
Why shouldn’t some of that money go to you?
Say you have a web page promoting your volunteer operation cleaning oil from wild birds in the Gulf of Mexico. Your site participates in Google AdSense and your content, naturally, is about oil spills and environmental damage. Then a BP ad is more than likely going to be right now at the top of the ads on your page. What you need to do to make this process punitive — make it hurt BP — is to change the system by finding a way to get more people to click on that BP ad.
I say ask them.
Here’s the copy I’d put in a bold font on my web page: “See that Google ad from BP, there on the right? If you click on that ad up to $0.88 of BP’s money will go to help clean oil-soaked birds in the Gulf. Go ahead, click the ad. It costs you nothing.”
This is not click fraud. Real Internet users interested in real environmental issues would be clicking. BP would be accomplishing its goal and should be happy. Except of course the click-through percentage under this scenario would soar, costing BP a lot more money than the company expects to spend.
Like the Bank of England in 1992, the question is not whether BP would eventually give up its policy but how much pain they are willing to endure before giving up. There’s always a chance that BP has an unlimited budget for this stuff and won’t even notice until a few million dollars are drained and a few thousand birds are saved. And unlike Soros, this arbitrage requires no money other than BP’s.
For those willing to take some risk there is a second approach to this scenario that might well involve click fraud. That would be to augment normal clicks with Robin Hood clicks (take from the rich and give to the poor clicks) generated by CloudCrowd or Amazon Mechanical Turk virtual workers. Paying these services a couple cents per click in order to make 88 cents would be a no-brainer and one heck of a business for the few minutes or days until BP runs out of mad money. That is if it can pass a Google click fraud audit.
Please let me know what happens if you try.
Bob, that’s a terrible idea, and probably a quick way to get your site banned from using Adsense.
Adsense “program policies prohibit any means of encouraging users to click on Google ads”, see here: http://adsense.blogspot.com/2007/04/encouraging-clicks.html
As Jackson says, I think it is against the terms of use. I don’t see why, however, you can’t say “BP is buying up ads from Google to redirect all oil spill news to their PR approved site. We have no idea whether there are ads for BP on this page or not, but if there are, and you happen to click on them, some of the money will go to us, and all money that goes to us is used for spill cleanup”
Because ANY terminology encouraging users to click on ads or even mentioning the ads will get you banned by AdSense.
sigh. Bob, five minutes of research would have prevented this article.
-Erica
Bad, bad, bad advice – definitely against the Google Adsense TOS.
Your suggestion will just get the publisher banned from adsense, and then all that money that could have been donated will be gone.
People, if you run adsense, you don’t want to do this – do not invite people to click on your ads in any way! Read the TOS carefully so you understand fully what you can and can’t do under the scheme.
(Even jobo’s suggestion above is against the TOS)
[…] link: I, Cringely » Blog Archive » BP AdWords cashectomy – Cringely on … Comments […]
BP has committed crimes against Planet Earth, however, this article is a very very bad idea. You are asking webmasters to get thrown out of Adsense without actually accomplishing anything.
A better idea is to block the BP websites and domains from advertising on one’s website, using the AdSense Competitive Ad Filter, so they can’t use your website to do damage-control. Go to “AdSense Setup”, then “Competitive Ad Filter” and add the offending domains there.
“This is not click fraud.”
Making the assertion doesn’t make it true.
“For those willing to take some risk there is a second approach to this scenario that might well involve click fraud. […] That is if it can pass a Google click fraud audit.”
Wow, really? Fraud is OK, as long as the target is someone you have judged to be deserving, and you manage to get missed by an audit? The ends justifies the means, does it? And this from a guy who wrote:
https://www.cringely.com/2009/08/is-technology-evil/
“those who claim to understand ethics aren’t so good at the technology parts, and vice versa”
But then you do claim to understand technology, so maybe it fits. I guess we know what you really think of ethics, now.
I like Bob’s reporting and analysis but sometimes I really think his actions can be misguided. This stunt isn’t as disturbing as when he exploited the FedEx employee who wouldn’t print his family’s nude Christmas cards, but it does lean in the same direction.
Why don’t you just suggest that everyone stop buying BP fuel. Surely there are other outlets from which to obtain fuel.
Finally, a useful suggestion that most of us can implement! 🙂
I stopped buying from Arco (BP brand in California/western states) after the spill. Just recently I waited at a long light and made a U-turn to go to another station instead of the Arco…and the other station was more expensive. $1 not in Arco/BP’s pockets. Makes me happy.
By the way, I notice I’m getting better gas mileage with Chevron gas anyway. Go figure.
-Erica
Turns out the gas from the Arco station is not bp gasoline, not from a bp field. BP do not integrate its supply chain vertically – – meaning they buy from the closest refinery mostly – – which is not an Arco refinery. So the profit the wholesale seller gets does not go to bp. If the Arco is a corporate owned story, then bp would lose maybe 10 cents or so per gallon on your boycott. BUT – – Not sure if the Arco stations are franchises (privately owned) or not – – the bp stations back east almost all are privately owned.
The world is so complicated that one cannot even pull off a proper boycott any more! (ps – I have no argument with your motives here — just dishing out helpful facts)
— meaning they buy from the closest refinery mostly
That’s the case for all gasoline brands everywhere.
They’ll just rebrand it “Freedom Fuel.” That should fool most Americans.
Well Bob – – – at least this one is up your alley a bit more. I like the unintended consequences angle. No idea if it’s click fraud. Don’t really care.
Y’all won’t BELIEVE what I learned today about the inner workings of the spill. That’s why I shouldn’t print it. Oh — ok, I’ll spill the beans (er, and then clean them up!). The Transocean rig hand who had claimed on multiple videos that the so-called bp company man on the rig, had argued with transocean’s drilling manager – – in front of the crew in their morning briefing (think Hill Street Blues) about how to finish the cementing and empty the mud from the wellbore – – well said rig hand has now retracted his statement. He now says it never happened.
If, dear audience, you are really paying attention to the facts and details behind the cause of the disaster (and yes, it’s a full-blown disaster), you will see incredible developments and admissions over the coming weeks — and perhaps just days.
Here’s another one for you. BP had ordered extra oil processing vessels to sail to the gulf a while back, because the existing one (Transocean Enterprise) was already full-up and oil was still spilling into the gulf. BP passed its press announcement on this decision, as per the rules, to “Incident Command”, for approval. The Incident Command ordered BP not to publish this news release until the US Govt could FIRST publish a news release “Ordering BP” to provided added oil processing vessels to the spill area. Then, Pavlov’s media jump right in praising the Govt for making bp get off its arse and provide more processing vessels.
It is scary seeing how system works from the inside.
None of the above changes the heartbreaking fact that oil is fouling our coasts. But do please take a moment to think twice before buying the B-movie script that media are writing on guilt and motives,
More to come. (That is — assuming Bob keeps riding the gravy train of oil-spill ratings — probably a safe assumption ).
Cringley,
Just step away from the vehicle, do what you do, and try harder not to be an ignorant slut.
People! Ease up! We, the Cringley cognizetti, (and there must be , what, 200,000, 300,000 of us?) now know how we can help BP distribute those obscene profits that they were going to make. Just think, if each of us does our part with just one click a day, we can create a meaningful contribution to our favorite cleanup organization. AND, we’ll be helping BP meet their committment to distribute $10,000 per day through Adsense. It’s better than charity! It costs you no money, only a few seconds for the page to load (you don’t actually have to read the BP BS (can we shorten that to just BPS?)). Gotta run, I’ve got clicking to do!
Hey Bob!
Put your money where your insanity is.
How do we set up a click campaign to test whether we prefer to BANKRUPT YOU?
You have the same problem with egomania that POTUS has.
Umm… Do people not realise that click fraud is quite literally, fraud. Fraud is illegal and can get you thrown in jail (if it’s worth everyone’s time going after you).
More to the point, encouraging fraud is quite literally encouraging a crime to be committed. Maybe this is the last Cringely article we see in a while (a shame… I’ve read these for years)
I just clicked on the link ‘Bob’s Finance Blog’ on the right side of this page.
The DNS for ‘adamsmithsmoneyworld.com’ routes to a GoDaddy page that says:

What’s the point of this?
Bob decides BP is guilty of something (like most of the media) without any real evidence to prove it, so decides to take punishment into his own hands.
Sounds like a vigilante to me. The sort of thing that leads to the breakdown of society.
What’s your next big stunt to get ad clicks?
Hey Bob I’m a big fan of your work – I go way back to the documentary! I look forward to your brilliant blog comments each week. Living in Scotland I’m a bit disappointed in this piece – not your finest moment. I’m not a fan of BP and it is terrible what is happening in the USA at the moment – devastating to whole communities – however…it’s in everyone’s interest for BP to sort the issue and keep going as a viable company. An awful lot of jobs both side of the Pond depend on it.
Brendan
Oh please. If BP goes under, other (hopefully) more responsible companies will take over their operations, and they’ll be hiring. Those jobs won’t vanish. According to your criteria, no company should ever be allowed to fail.
At least their British employees will still have health insurance while waiting for their new jobs.
Sounds like a job for 4chan!
It would almost be worth disabling Adblock for this. Almost.
kz
The more BP pays out to AdSense the less it has to reimburse the residents of the Gulf Coast. I can’t believe you didn’t think of this already.
there’s another way to do this that bob doesn’t cover, probably because it does require money. bp is only spending $1.50 to rank #1 for these ads – if people start buying ads on the same terms for the same (or more) price, then bp has to bid more per click. this makes the terms more competitive (terms like “meningitis” can cost upwards of $20 to rank with). even if the average bid goes up to $2.00, that’s a pretty huge increase in the per ad cost to bp.
if they suddenly no longer rank first, then what are they going to do? bid more – they’ve got no other choice but to back out. combine that with a grass roots click campaign like bob suggests, and you’ve got one very expensive ad campaign for bp.
So you want to bankrupt the only entity in the world that has a chance of plugging the oil leak any time in the near future? The company that has pledged to pay $20B in clean-up, restoration, and compensation? The company in whom millions of Americans own shares of stock directly or indirectly (via pension funds, insurance, index funds, etc)? The company that employs tens of thousands of hard working honest Americans? All without affording BP the due process you would extend to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed?
Eh, that’s some great idea.
Spoken like a rational adult and not an reactionary teenager.
And… in the end the birds are probably better off being euthanized. See, the birds are not just covered but have also INGESTED the oil. Most will die anyway.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and lightweight it is, I think about it to be a relatively distinctive hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and beautiful OLED screen is barely smaller than the touch screen, but the participant itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/three as a lot, and is noticeably smaller in width and top, whereas being only a hair thicker.

Way back I used waxing to get rid of my unsightly hair however it was so uncomfortable that I decided to quit. I gave waxing a try and it performed ok but was very expensive. So I took most of my time reviewing the no no styles. I actually purchased the tria laser and was very happy with the outcome. It gave me fast hair removal at an unbelievable price. I sincerely recommend it to anybody as opposed to stringing.
