I have a mouse in my RV. Or as many correspondents have told me I have MICE in my RV, because the concept of a solitary mouse is beyond their considerable experience. This month my wife, three young sons and I (and of course the mice) are in California, mainly touring in our 1996 Winnebago. We tour, we fix, then tour some more. The old Winnie was never built for 107-degree desert temperatures and neither was I. So since we’re broken-down waiting (again) for the fixit man to come, I think this might be a good time to update my readers on a few old projects.
But first let me say that in an RV that has both Verizon and AT&T wireless data service, in California at least, Verizon is better — substantially better. More bars in more places, indeed!
1) Whatever happened to NerdTV? We made a season for PBS back in 2005-2006 then shot a second season in 2007 that was never aired because of pesky ownership issues and people still wanting to be paid. The show itself has morphed a bit and will reappear with a new name and an exciting new weekly format this fall as a co-production with the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. It will be available for streaming online and may appear in some form on television, too, possibly even with PBS. Look for an announcement on this soon. And if your big-to-bigger company wants to sponsor the first season (36 shows!) let’s talk. But I’ll warn you this is a professional production that isn’t cheap to make and we’d prefer a single sponsor. Still, as the old shows continue to show, the content ought to be timeless.
2) And what happened to Bob’s disk drive project with its stainless steel foil platters? The idea, remember, was to dramatically reduce the rotating mass with several attendant advantages: 1) lower cost; 2) dramatically lower power; 3) higher performance, and; 4) greater shock resistance. An iPod with this new type of drive ought to easily run 3-4 times longer on the same battery. A data center could see storage-related power consumption decrease by up to 85 percent.
Yeah, but what happened?
It took time to develop the stainless steel foil, itself. Most of the other parts come straight from any disk drive maker’s parts bin but the foil required lots and lots of R&D which was done primarily for nothing — no money — which means it took longer than we would have liked. But that work is now pretty much complete, the foil is indeed smoother-than-smooth, and a pilot production plant is being built in Japan thanks to the recent entry of a Silicon Valley investor whose name you would recognize. Look for licensed products to appear starting in 2010. Interestingly improvements in flash drive technology haven’t particularly hurt the market opportunity, either, since the foil is WAY cheaper and video applications are driving mobile storage requirements up faster than flash prices are coming down.
3) Finally, whatever happened to my plan to land rovers on the Moon? Am I ambitious or what?
The Moon project, which was originally intended to vie for the $20 million Google Lunar X-Prize, has been moving forward slowly but quietly. It’s a little harder to do, you see, when there isn’t a $20 million payday at the end, but it became quickly clear to us that there is unlikely to be any winner of that Google prize in the five years ending in 2012 as the contest is currently structured.
Team Cringely, on the other hand, still expects to reach the Moon by 2011 and will by fall have a number of announcements on that front including major technical alliances, major corporate sponsorships, and a global TV deal. And this is no stunt: we’re working with NASA’s Goddard Space Center to answer a long list of important scientific questions until we use-up our 24th and last rover.
So it’s a busy summer, but mainly we’re wondering now if the 107-degree heat will drive out those mice?
A big fan Bob. Thanks for the updates. I’m more relieved, than anything, that you’re projects move forward. Wish I could be more help – but cheerleading is all I can do! Stay cool. (P.S. – Way to go on the good parenting too, hope your children appreciate it! They will some day. Maybe with some success with the projects mentioned above, you can buy a mice-less trailer…or perhaps your mortgage deal will pan out.)
Only 107? That isn’t enough to get rid of mice. We had them hold up in our building in Roswell and sometimes it was 115 in places. A cat is the best way to rid yourself of the problem. It works well unless you have allergies to cats.
Glad to see things are coming soon. Can’t wait for the NerdTV redux. One project you didn’t mention was the sensor system for infants. What is the status on that?
Take Care,
Joe
I would also like a follow up on the infant sensor and with the question:
Can you use the same device to monitor sleep apnea? To many of us old fat tired people looking at these screens could probably use this to avoid going to some sleep study that we will not go to.
Bob
Great news Bob. I look forward to storing episodes of the Team Cringely documentary on my steel platter hard drive equipped media centre in the near future!
By the way I think its good to keep some projects in the dark like this, then you only need to release the good news.
” Interestingly improvements in flash drive technology haven’t particularly hurt the market opportunity, either, since the foil is WAY cheaper and video applications are driving mobile storage requirements up faster than flash prices are coming down.”
I don’t understand the way this part of the article is phrased (or perhaps I think the implications of the phrasing are foolish)
(1) Mobile applications are cute and all, but I cannot believe that the market for mobile disks (which is different from the market for mobile storage, since most people would much rather have the advantages of flash than the extra space of disk) is larger than the market for laptops, external storage, and suchlike. Or, to put it differently, good luck selling to camera manufacturers, but I think you’d be a lot better off selling to computer manufacturers. Certainly I’d be willing to pay 10% more for external storage that I KNEW used lower power.
The problem of course is that knowledge — I’m not going to be especially impressed by a box colored green with a picture of a windmill on it. To believe some story about lower power utilization I’m going to require real numbers, provided by a trustworthy third party, with legitimate comparisons against third parties.
Since this is the industry that happily writes claims about USB 480 Mb/s on its boxes, feeling no shame about the fact that there is no way in hell you will get better than half that rate; or that has no interest in putting on its boxes such numbers as the number of IOs that can be sustained per sec or the seek times; or that claims its products are “green” if the casing is made of bamboo; you’ll forgive me if my bar for paying any attention to what’s written on the box is fairly high.
And this goes to the heart of the matter. It’s one thing to have a superior technology. It’s another thing to get that technology to the market. It is an OBVIOUS point that when someone is buying disks at Frys, all they have to go on is what’s written on the box — few consumers scan the internet for reviews before they head off to Frys.It is just as OBVIOUS a point that what’s written on the box is generally freaking useless in terms of providing useful and trustworthy technical details. It is, in the third place, just as OBVIOUS that if you insist on packaging your product as just another hard drive, with no reliable information on the box to distinguish it from everyone else, then you cannot be surprised when, oh dear, no-one treats your product as in any way special, and no-one is willing to pay 10% extra for it.
These are all three obvious points — and yet we’ve had more than a few promising tech companies that never got anywhere because their packaging was designed by morons.
(2) There remains ample scope for exciting performance improvements in the field of hybrid drives. This is especially true if your drive is also targeted at very low power. And yet everything so far delivered in this space is pretty much useless. We get something pathetic like 128MB of flash in the system, rather than something worthwhile like 4GB. We get the slowest flash that be purchased. Rather than transparent caching, backed up by smart algorithms, we get two pools of storage that are expected to be managed by the OS.
STUPID STUPID STUPID.
Once again, if your company actually made an effort to build such a product properly, actually built the product on the basis of “how can we best engineer this product” rather than “how can we tick off some bullet points at the lowest possible cost”, and actually made the quality metrics visible somewhere on the box, there is great potential — god knows the competition is doing nothing worthwhile in this space.
But I won’t hold my breath. I’ve seen too much stupidity, too many lies, too many claims of great breakthroughs in this space, to get excited too soon.
And what about your cure for cancer?
I’m looking forward to the fruits of all your endeavors. I hope the foil drives are a big success.
As I read this posting, Bob, a thought kept coming to mind:
“This reads like you mailed it in ….” Then, I realized, you HAD!

As I read this posting, Bob, a thought kept coming to mind:

I thought he sent this one in by carrier vulture. 🙂
Some of my earliest memories are family trips in the California desert, waiting in the middle of nowhere for the Chevy van (later a Suburban) to cool off, or hunting for parts in some small town. Closest we had to a Winnebago was a Corvair camper van. Hey, it had a sink with running water! Air-cooled motors, slow, winding mountain roads, and hot days just don’t mix well.
So as your sweating over that broken-down Winny, keep in mind that your kids will remember this as some of the best times of their lives. Weird, huh?
Great to hear that NerdTV is coming back and the metal foil drive is coming soon.
I agree with Joe, a cat is your best solution, if a low-tech one. If you’re passing through the East Bay you can borrow ours! I liked your column on texting, and as a teacher I concur; it’s hard to stop… what with those pesky FCC regs prohibiting jammers… and is really annoying!
Best of luck on your trip. Before you know it your boys will be able to help with the driving! 🙂
Enjoyed the updates – I agree that the boys are probably having fun. I’m intrigued that you have carefully avoided mentioning your wife’s reactions to the break downs.
You’re the coolest, Bob. Thanks for your hard work ^__^. Also, congrats on the metal foil HD project moving forward!
I had a problem with mice getting in my miata while it was stored. I solved it by taking some yogurt cups, putting a couple of cotton balls in each, then adding some peppermint oil. Place a few of these scent bombs inside the car, the trunk and the engine compartment (take it out in the spring) and nothing with a nose will get anywhere close.
Worked like a charm. And the car was minty fresh when I opened it up!
Old Nerd TV episodes are no longer relevant. Technology stories have a short shelf life, just like the products.
Same problem with the foil drives. The competition has been moving forward for 2 years. Foil drives have been standing still. This is the reason why new technologies rarely unseat the leadership. Look at AMD’s history.
The moon project is not believable either. Why? No specifics. There should be plenty by now. It sounds like an outline on one sheet of paper.
Basically, it’s all talk/hype and no action. Yawnnnn.
Hi Mkkby. Why are you such a hater? Chill out. You’ll live longer. Maybe even happier.
To Mkkby who said ” Nerd TV episodes are no longer relevant”. Are you kidding? Interviews with Andy Hertzfeld, Max Levchin, Bill Joy, Brewster Kahle, Tim O’Reilly, Dave Winer, Dan Drake, Avram Mill, Anina, Dan Bricklin, Doug Englebart, Bob Kahn, Judy Estrin are no longer relevant? Several of these people were instrumental in making The Internet/personal computing what it is today and the rest have had significant impacts in their own right. Interviews with these people are no longer relevant in the same way that an interview with Werner Von Braun or Buzz Aldrin is no longer relevant to the space program. You have either never watched NerdTV or have a very small mind.
Correction. Avram Miller, not Mill
Robert, I’m surprised at you. I really thought you – with your vast intellect and formidable data gathering skills – would know better. I am both shocked and saddened that you would make such a massive mistake in the pages of this hallowed blog, leading me to doubt every word that you have ever spoke, or will speak. Have you no shame, sir? Have you no integrity?!
That is an image of a pika, not a mouse.
Please take greater caution not to repeat this error in the future, and I trust we can all put this terrible incident behind us.
(In all seriousness – good luck in all your endeavors!)
Bob, great to hear about NerdTV 2.0. I wasn’t as familiar with the foil drive concept, perhaps because I expected it would show up in the hands of a company or companies, but all the same – great to hear about that too.
News on NerdTV 2 is so welcome and unexpected, I’m glad to see it. I was beginning to think it was going to be the next Duke Nukem Forever. 😛
Concerning the mice . . . you’ll need a square-sided baking pan. Turn it upside down & prop it up with a graham cracker against the underside, about an inch in from the edge. Add a dab of peanut butter to the cracker for maximum effect. In the morning there will be at least one mouse under the pan.
Not exactly high-tech, but this has never failed me!
Long time reader…Great blog and I’m glad to hear your projects are progressing.
I love the title this week. Great cold war era book by the same. You developing any peaceful uses for the Q-bomb by chance?
Wow! That was your best column in a long time. I love to here about real projects, especially ones with your unique spin.
THANKS!
Your friends are right – and Mice are always eating something – if not food in the cupboard, then electrical insulation or the plastic / timber of the vehicle!
Our cat brought live mice inside and let them go (might have been trying to train us?).
I’d place faith in mousetraps baited with peanut butter. When you haven’t caught one for a week or two, block up access holes (anything a finger could squeeze into) and leave poison bait…
Regards,
Martin
California? 107 degrees? Crappy AT&T service?
It sounds an awful lot like you are in my neighborhood.
If you are (southeastern corner of the state), be thankful it’s not August (picture 105 degrees at midnight), and if you stop by the local Farm Bureau office I’ll be happy to give you a tour of the area (complete with air conditioning).
Nice jpeg of mouse – do you own that photo – it would make a nice mission logo for moon landing project – or even as brand name for steel foil drives – Mouse Roar!! drives.
So, to recap:
1) NerdTV – coming soon, though as a different animal
2) Foil disks – a factory is starting to be built, and next year we’ll see stuff
3) Team Cringley – there’s some progress, though slower, but in 2 years something will happen
I’m a cynic, I guess … too jaded by amazing promises and little results. You say you’ll have more concrete info for us soon … well, let’s have at it!
Until then, I’m with Mkkby. This sounds a lot like XsunX (promised an amazing product 6 years ago, and since then has done nothing but continue to make promises with zero results).
What has happened to your website – there is a heading for plentyoffish.com , a DATING site!!!! Is this a hijack of your website?? there is no way you would condone such a shameless hustle
MAKE IT STOP
I’m in grad school right now and we’ve finished watching your series that was on PBC back in ’96. I actually found it very insightful and was wondering when you might do another series!? At the end of the very last episode you say, “see you in 10 years!” So it’s been almost 14?!
I was also wondering what kind of personal computer do you have? After watching your special it just made me a little curious as to which one you choose to use!
Thanks,
Sarah
Sarah:
In a recent column, Bob mentioned buying a new Mac Mini. I’m sure that he has used both Macs & PCs of every stripe, but I’m also pretty sure that he prefers Macs for personal use (despite his personal disdain for Mr. Jobs).
And I agree, Bob’s 1990’s series “Triumph of the Nerds” is one of the most fascinating documentaries I have ever seen on any subject.
I read ‘ole Cringe for a good laugh. His postings are 100% pure ravings of a has-been lunatic that never ‘made it’, that’s for sure.
But now I feel kind of sorry for old Bob. Imagining him sitting out in the desert stuck in his broken-down Winnebago, with a wife and kids who very likely hate his guts… It almost makes me feel bad for the guy…
But then I read the updates about how all his secret projects are going to hit the big time “real soon now” and I can’t help but laugh.
I guess his life is a tragic comedy. His header image kind of proves it, eh?
Yet we all keep reading (and now listening, writing back, and talking to each other); for 12 years, in my case.
Well step aside Cicero, there is a new kid in town.
Dear Bob, please pay no mind to these haters. It is very refreshing to read about the leisured life and the simple pleasures in the IT and Electronics Industry.
Please keep up the good good work and the long thinks too. You are an inspiration to me and my friends, though we do miss the PBS column. Cool picture on top too.
Fraternally,
Richter.
Well, I hope those foil drives come soon.
Since in the last 18 months the retail price of a 128GB 2.5″ SSD has dropped from nearly $4,000 to $250.
Eagerly awaiting the return of NerdTV Season 2. 🙂 Keep up the great work, Bob.
Just Googled and read the whole article and i must have to say that me and my husband loved reading your post. We bookmarked and will regularly check more updates to come from your website. Thanks for making us one step more enlightened with your blog.
I’m going to bookmark this blogg on Identica to get more clicks for you.

Take heed you do not find what you do not seek.
Just wanted to say I enjoyed the site. You have really put a lot of time into your content and it is just wonderfull!

Great job on this post! I found it quite informative. I’ve saved the link to your web site and I am positive that I’ll come back again in future.
Hello, the place did you get this info can you please support this with some proof or you might say some good reference as I and others will really appreciate. Hey there, I think your site might be having browser compatibility issues. When I look at your blog in Opera, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, amazing blog!
This is a very nice blog you have here, I’ll be sure to mention it to some friends of mine
Flip side to popularized assumption, liposuction cannot make your undesirable fat dissolve just like that. Undergoing plastic surgery can be an ideal option for many. Of course, that does not mean that if your skin is not where you want it to be that
